2005 Alaska State Youth of the Year Winner

Congratulation to our 2005 Alaska State Youth of the Year, Manuel Dunham!

L to R: Rep. Kevin Meyer, Senator Johnny Ellis, Alaska Youth of the Year Manuel Dunham, Senator Ben Stevens, BGC CEO John Oates.
Back row: Senator Gary Wilken.

As we reflect on the 2005 Breakfast with the Best: Alaska Youth of the Year Celebration and Legislative Breakfast, we are mindful of the Club friends who provided enthusiastic support. Special thanks to Board members Senator Ben Stevens, Senator Johnny Ellis, Representative Kevin Meyer, Dixie Retherford, Alan Budahl, John Dede and Kristi Caitlin for participating in the event, Bechtel, UAA and FNBA for sponsoring the event and Club friends who graciously donated items for legislative goodie bags.

The breakfast proved to be a sophisticated event worthy of the outstanding youth being recognized. Twenty-four Senators and Representatives, the Commissioner of Health and Social Services, the Commissioner of Military and Veterans Affairs, and eight key administration aides attended the festivities.

Manuel Dunham of Fairbanks was selected as the 2005 Alaska Youth of the Year and received a one-year tuition scholarship from the University of Alaska Anchorage, a new laptop computer courtesy of the Beaumont Foundation and a $4,000 college expense stipend. Manuel was pleasantly surprised by an additional $1,000 scholarship from Reader’s Digest and runner-up Amy Collman of Seward received great news that the University was awarding a second tuition waiver to her! After the breakfast, youth finalists were introduced on the House Floor, met with legislators and toured the capitol city.
